No. 1 Horn Lake turns defense up in 59-52 win over No. 2 Tupelo

A few called this a preview to a possible 6A playoff game. Let’s hope they are right.

No. 1 Horn Lake Lady Eagles (24-1) defeated the No. 2 Tupelo Lady Wave (23-2) at Tupelo High, 59-52. This non-playoff contest could be played again in two weeks if both teams win in division tournaments next week.

A back-and-forth game for most of three quarters, it eventually favored Horn Lake in the 4th when a stingy half court defense forced THS to throw it away during opportunistic times.¬†Matt Justice’s girls took their first lead of the game two minutes into the second half but Horn Lake never gave up their intensity. They outscored Tupelo 22-10 in the fourth.

The Lady Eagles were led by Dandy Dozen standout Olivia Cunningham and Alondrea Rush who each notched 20 points. A’Queen Hayes, another Dandy Dozen senior, finished with nine points.

For Tupelo, lone senior Bre Jernigan provided 15 points, junior Asia Partlow had 10, and freshman Alayjah Sherer finished with 10. The Lady Wave’s leading scorer, junior Jaleigha Polk (14.3 PPG), had nine in the THS loss.

Horn Lake will conclude their regular at Senatobia tomorrow while Tupelo hosts Corinth on Senior Night. Both will begin division tournament play Tuesday and conclude Friday. 1-6A will match up with 2-6A in the 1st Round Monday, February 24th.
