Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (Sept. 28)

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball defeated Saltillo last Tuesday but lost to the Tigers in a double-header Thursday. They also lost to South Pontotoc yesterday. They will host Bruce Tuesday and travel to Calhoun City Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (11-11, 2-1) lost to Starkville last Tuesday but defeated Columbus Thursday. Varsity traveled to Clinton’s tournament at Mississippi College yesterday and went 1-3. THS will host Tish. County tomorrow, travel to Olive Branch Tuesday, and host Southaven Thursday.

XC: Both squads ran at the Gulf Coast Stampede in Pensacola, FL yesterday. Christina Daniels (6th), Olivia Love, Darnell Collier (1st), and Logan Long were all top finishers for Tupelo. Both teams will travel to Mississippi College in Clinton Saturday.

FOOTBALL: No. 3 Tupelo (5-0, 1-0) opened Div. 1-6A play with a convincing 43-6 win over Hernando last Friday. The Golden Wave will travel to Grenada Friday. The pregame show and game will be streamed LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

SWIM: THS swim both too first place at last week’s invitation at the Tupelo Aquatic Center.

HOMECOMING: Senior Neely Brown was crowned Homecoming Queen last week. Her escort was Carson Roberts.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • 8th grader Riley Chapman hit her first career home run against Saltillo last Thursday.
  • Junior libero Kaitlyn Wilson totaled 10 aces, 17 kills, and 36 digs in six matches last week.
  • Senior LB Demarcus Rogers had 11 solo tackles and four assisted in last week’s win over Hernando.

Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (Sept. 21)

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (8-8, 3-2) lost to Tish. County last Monday and South Panola twice last Thursday. They will host Saltillo Tuesday (5:00 /6:30), travel to Saltillo for a varsity double-header Thursday (5:00), and host South Pontotoc Saturday (10:00/11:30 DH).

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (9-7, 1-0) lost to DeSoto Central last Thursday, 3-0. Varsity hosted their 15th Annual Tupelo Volleyfest Saturday, went 5-1, and placed 2nd in the Best of the Best tourney. They will host division foe Starkville Tuesday (5:30/6:30), travel to Columbus Thursday (5:00/6:00), and travel to Clinton’s tournament at Mississippi College Saturday.

XC: Both squads ran at Saltillo yesterday. Girls and boys both swept competition. The teams will travel to Pensacola, FL to compete in the Gulf Coast Stampede Saturday.

FOOTBALL: Despite a bye week, Tupelo (4-0) rose one spot to No 3 in last week’s Mississippi AP High School Football poll. The Golden Wave will open Division 1-6A Friday with Hernando on Homecoming. The City of Tupelo will host a downtown parade Thursday at 4 p.m. and a pep rally at Fairpark after. The 2014 Homecoming Court will be presented during halftime Friday night.

SWIM: THS swim boys took first place while the girls placed 2nd at last week’s invitation at the Tupelo Aquatic Center. THS will host a number of teams Tuesday.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Lady Wave varsity volleyball, 10 players over six matches at yesterday’s Volleyfest, totaled 47 aces, 106 kills, 15 blocks, 94 assists, and 63 digs last week.
  • 8th grade runner Leanna Long snagged a top 10 finish at Saltillo to help the girls finish first overall. On the boys side, sophomore William Bradford has improved his time over every race since September 2013. During the last year, he’s improved his 5K time by over ten minutes.
  • Junior band member captain Gabriel Spencer never complains, is always on time, and tries to always motivate others as first person section leader. She’s also very studious and has the perfect balance between academics and extracurricular band activities.

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (8-5, 3-0) lost to IAHS last Tuesday. They will travel to Tish. County tomorrow (5:30 V/JV after), host South Panola in a varsity double-header Thursday (5:00), and host Calhoun City Saturday (1:00/2:30).

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (4-5, 1-0) lost at Southaven last Thursday, 3-0. Varsity will host their 15th Annual Tupelo Volleyfest Saturday.

XC: Both squads ran at Pontotoc yesterday. Girls won overall, boys placed 2nd. The teams will travel to Saltillo to compete Saturday.

FOOTBALL: Tupelo (4-0) rose one spot to No 4 in last week’s Mississippi AP High School Football poll. The Golden Wave defeated a tough Saltillo (3-1) team, 21-9. THS will have an open week this week, and open Division 1-6A next Friday with Hernando on Homecoming.

SWIM: THS swim swept in Starkville last week to improve to 2-0. They will host a variety of teams at the Tupelo Aquatic Center Tuesday at 4 p.m.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Junior Ali Watts went 3-4 at the plate against IAHS, with a double and an RBI.
  • Junior libero Kaitlyn Wilson had four aces, four kills, and seven digs in the Lady Wave’s loss at Southaven.
  • Senior runner Christina Daniels ran solo for essentially the entire race at Pontotoc and finished with a personal best of 18:30, which put her a minute and 22 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. On the boys side, senior Darnell Collier ran neck and neck with Oxford’s Tristan Orman for 2.5 miles before pulling away to win by 10 seconds and notching a personal best of 15:51.
  • Senior cornerback Demaris Wise totaled nine solo tackles, six assisted, and two for a loss in the 21-9 win over Saltillo.
  • Junior band member George Seiler is nicknamed “Mr. Fix It” and has helped taking on repairs of band equipment.

Mississippi State legend Burke Masters visits Tupelo Baseball

Father Burke Masters, known as the “Baseball Priest”, visited with members of the Tupelo baseball team after workouts yesterday. The Joliet, Illinois native played college baseball at Mississippi State, and is best remembered for his grand slam against Florida State in 1990 which sent MSU to the College World Series in Omaha.

He was nominated as one of the top student-athletes in MSU history at the South Eastern Conference’s 75th anniversary. In four years as a math major at State, he never received anything lower than an “A” in his classes. He finished his college career with a .315 battling average.

After MSU, he signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Father Burke is currently an ordained priest present serving as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Joliet.

Masters also serves as the team chaplain for the Chicago Cubs.

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (8-4, 3-0) lost to Tish. County last Tuesday, defeated South Panola Thursday, and lost a double-header to Hatley yesterday. They will travel to Fulton Tuesday (5:00/6:30) and host Oxford Thursday (5:00/6:30).

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (4-4, 1-0) opened division play with a 3-0 win over Horn Lake last Tuesday. Both squads will travel to Southaven Thursday  (5:30/6:30) to play in a non-division match.

XC: Both squads traveled to Moulton, AL yesterday and participated in the Chickasaw Trails. The teams will travel to Pontotoc to compete Saturday.

FOOTBALL: Tupelo (3-0) remained at No. 5 in last week’s Mississippi AP High School Football poll. Tupelo’s defense has only allowed 15 points in the first three weeks of the season. That number is second in all of 6A. The Tupelo Football Pregame Show sponsored by Itawamba Community College will air at 6:10 and kickoff will be at 7:00 at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

SWIM: THS swim opened the season with a convincing sweep at the Tupelo Aquatic Center Thursday. Both teams will travel to Starkville tomorrow and compete at the Sanderson Center on the campus of Mississippi State University.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Freshman outside hitter/setter Addy Parker Spees notched 12 kills, six assists, and two aces in a key volleyball division win over Horn Lake Tuesday night.
  • 8th grade runner Olivia Love ran 13:30 for 2.1 miles to be Tupelo’s top underclassmen performer for the 2nd week in a row and helped the girls to a 2nd place finish out of 30 teams in the junior high girls race yesterday. Ninth grade runner Grant Yancey ran 12:13 to lead a very talented freshman group that secured a 2nd place finish out of 35 teams in the boys junior high race yesterday.
  • Senior running back Tavonta Hadley had nine rushes for 73 yards and a TD in Friday’s 38-8 win over Shannon. He also caught four passes for 73 yards.

Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (August 31)

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (7-2, 2-0) etched two wins over Oxford last Thursday and took a loss to Amory Tuesday. Yesterday’s game, due to weather, will be finished this Saturday when Tupelo will travel to Hatley. They host Tish. County Tuesday (5:00/6:30), travel to South Panola Thursday for a (5:00/6:30), and at Hatley Saturday for a double-header (1:00).

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (3-4) defeated Jackson Academy 3-0 last Tuesday. Coach Bishop’s team will open division play against Horn Lake at THS Thursday at 6 p.m. No JV will be played.

XC: Both squads opened 2014 at the Memphis Twilight last night. Varsity girls placed 11th, behind Starkville and ahead of Pearl and Madison Central. The boys finished 24th, behind Pearl and ahead of Madison Central and Starkville. JV girls finished 2nd, boys finished 19th. Both teams will travel to Moulton, AL Saturday to complete in the Chickasaw Trails.

FOOTBALL: Tupelo (2-0) entered the Mississippi AP High School Football poll at No. 5 Tuesday. After a sluggish first half against Center Hill Friday, the Golden Wave scored 41 unannounced second half points. THS will host the next two games against in-county rivals Shannon (0-1) and Saltillo (2-0) before entering a bye week. The Tupelo Football Pregame Show sponsored by Itawamba Community College will air at 6:10 and kickoff will be at 7:00 at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

SWIM: THS swim will open the 2014 season at the Tupelo Aquatic Center Thursday at 4 p.m. Opponents include Starkville, Lewisburg, Amory, and West Point. This will be the first official high school meet since the center opened last spring.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Senior infielder Rachel Rooney went 5-8 at the plate, with five runs scored, six RBIs, and a three-run homer against Oxford.
  • Senior runner Christina Daniels posted a 19:01, her 2nd fastest time every, in yesterday’s 5K. It was the 7th fastest time out of 587 girls. 8th grader Sam Sliman was honored at Friday’s football for recording a perfect score on his SATP. Saturday, he placed 2nd in the boys 5K and was 15 seconds off the course record.
  • The offensive linemen for Tupelo football allowed the Golden Wave to have 43 carries and 424 rushing yards in their 48-7 win over Center Hill.

Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (August 24)

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (5-1) notched two wins over Bruce and Houlka. They host Amory Tuesday (5:00/6:30), travel to Oxford Thursday for a double-header (5:00), and host Hately Saturday (4:00/5:30).

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (2-4) defeated New Albany 3-0 last Tuesday. JV went 5-1 and finished second in the Madison Central JV tournament yesterday. Both varsity and JV will host Jackson Academy Tuesday at 5:30 and 6:30. Both matches will stream live at www.goldenwaveathletics.com. A middle school match versus JA will be played at THS at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon.

XC: Both squads will open 2014 at the Memphis Twilight this Saturday.

FOOTBALL: Tupelo opened 2014 with a 20-0 win at Lafayette, the 2013 5A Runner-Up, last Friday. The win was the third shut out since the Trent Hammond era opened last August. Tupelo now focuses on Center Hill (0-1) in their first home game on the newly constructed Renasant Field at Golden Wave Stadium. A community-wide pep rally will take place at Fairpark Thursday 5 p.m. THS hosts a community-wide tailgate beside Golden Wave Stadium Friday from 5:00-6:30. Fans are asked to wear BLUE at Friday’s game. The Tupelo Football Pregame Show sponsored by Itawamba Community College will air at 6:10 and kickoff will be at 7:00 at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Sophomore softballer Lauren Knight went 3-1 last week pitching, including one shut out. She hit 8-12 with a double, a triple, two RBIs, and five runs scored.
  • Freshman setter Gabbie Freeman led her team to six wins this week. She totaled 11 aces, six kills, 12 assists, and five digs in those games.
  • Senior linebacker Justin Clifton picked up an interception, a sack, a fumble, and four tackles (one for a loss) in Friday’s win over Lafayette.

Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (August 17)

SP SOFTBALL: Lady Wave softball (2-0) captured two big victories over Baldwyn and Pine Grove at the Mooreville Classic yesterday. They will host Myrtle Tuesday (5:00/6:30), travel to Bruce Thursday (5:00/6:30), and the South Pontotoc tournament Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL: Lady Wave volleyball (1-4) fell to Our Lady Academy, Starkville, Oxford, and Olive Branch at the Set it Off Challenge in Jackson. Coach Bishop’s team looks to rebound Tuesday when they travel to New Albany. JV will participate in the Madison Central High tournament Saturday.

XC: Both teams competed in an intrasquad meet at Ballard last Friday. XC will open 2014 at the Memphis Twilight next Saturday, August 30th.

FOOTBALL: Tupelo defeated IAHS 12-0 in a controlled-scrimmage in Fulton last Friday. THS will open the season at Lafayette Friday at 7 p.m. The Tupelo Football Pregame Show sponsored by Itawamba Community College will air at 6:30 and kickoff will be at 7:00 at www.goldenwaveathletics.com. BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Junior softballer Ali Watts finished the weekend 4 of 6 at the plate with two doubles, three runs, three RBIs in wins over Baldwyn and Pine Grove.
  • XC freshman Koji Dijkwel ran faster Friday than any run of the year last year. He helped the freshman group finish 3rd at Friday’s intrasquad run. 8th grader Olivia Love, who finished 10th on the team last season, opened the year placing 2nd overall.
  • Senior nose guard Jamal Wren played with high energy and help kick start the defense against IAHS Friday night.

Preview of Tupelo High Athletics (August 10)

Welcome back to the blog. Not a lot happened last week due to the start of school but THS activities will officially kickoff this Tuesday.

SP SOFTBALL: Coach Josh Hegwood’s team lost to East Union and IAHS at the Mooreville Classic yesterday. They will travel to the Baldwin Jamboree this Saturday. Opponents will be named later.

VOLLEYBALL: Coach Laurie Bishop’s girls will open the season at Belmont Tuesday. They will then travel to Madison’s Set It Off Challenge Friday and Saturday. Opponents will be named at Set It Off later.

XC: Coach Anna Kathryn Sloan’s and Jonathan Begnaud’s teams will run against one another at Ballard Park Friday at 6 p.m. XC will open 2014 at the Memphis Twilight Saturday, August 30th.

FOOTBALL: Coach Trent Hammond looks to get his first dose of football action in Fulton Friday night. THS will battle IAHS in a controlled scrimmage beginning at 7 p.m. The jamboree will stream LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com. THS will open 2014 at Lafayette Friday, August 22nd.

MEET THE WAVE: Fall sports (volleyball, football, softball, XC, and swim) will be introduced in the Performing Arts Center at THS Thursday, August 14th from 4-6 p.m. Admission is FREE.

Upcoming reminders from Tupelo High athletics

Day 1 is in the books!

Tupelo High School started back today, and that means a new chapter. Here are a few updates and reminders:

  • Volleyball, football, softball, and XC officially began practices today. Swim hits the pools Wednesday.
  • THS Open House will be Thursday, August 14th from 4-6 p.m. Meet the Wave Fall sports will take place in the PAC at 6 p.m. Admission is FREE.
  • Swim will hold a parent meeting in the gym Tuesday, August 5th at 6 p.m. Softball boosters will meet in the cafeteria Thursday, August 7th at 6 p.m.
  • Football will host Center Hill at Renasant Field at Golden Wave Stadium Friday, August 29th at 7 p.m. A community-wide pep rally will take place at Fairpark Thursday, August 28th at 5 p.m. Also, a THS tailgate will take place on the practice fields Friday, August 29th from 4:30-6:30 p.m..
  • In celebration of the new blue turf, THS asks everyone to BLUE-OUT against Center Hill.
  • Speaking of apparel, THS athletic director Andy Schoggin announces official Adidas gear can be ordered at https://rexteamsports.itemorder.com. Click the link and use the code “THSA14“. Deadline to order is Tuesday, August 19th. Items will be delivered to THS for pickup Thursday, August 28th.
