Mississippi State legend Burke Masters visits Tupelo Baseball

Father Burke Masters, known as the “Baseball Priest”, visited with members of the Tupelo baseball team after workouts yesterday. The Joliet, Illinois native played college baseball at Mississippi State, and is best remembered for his grand slam against Florida State in 1990 which sent MSU to the College World Series in Omaha.

He was nominated as one of the top student-athletes in MSU history at the South Eastern Conference’s 75th anniversary. In four years as a math major at State, he never received anything lower than an “A” in his classes. He finished his college career with a .315 battling average.

After MSU, he signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Father Burke is currently an ordained priest present serving as Vocation Director for the Diocese of Joliet.

Masters also serves as the team chaplain for the Chicago Cubs.

Special thanks to David Garrett for the story.
