Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (February 16)

BASKETBALL: Lady Wave basketball got a small taste of a playoff atmosphere at THS Thursday. Matt Justice’s No. 2-ranked girls (24-2) suffered their second loss of the season against No. 1 Horn Lake. They may see each other against in a few weeks if both keep winning. His team turned around 24 hours later and defeated Corinth on Senior Night. Golden Wave basketball (18-9) pulled off two of the most impressive back-to-back wins of the season against Horn Lake and Corinth. The boys were down ten starting the fourth with Horn Lake, and Corinth was ranked No. 1 in the Daily Journal’s boys rankings. Tupelo hosts the Division 2-6A tournament Tuesday and Friday. BOWLING: Both teams captured Class II Regional titles at Depot Bowling Center in Philadelphia yesterday. The girls (13-0-1), led by Taylor Russell’s high series of 803 and high game of 247, defeated Neshoba Central 3-2 in Bakers finals. The boys (14-0-1), led by Clayton Horton’s high series of 864, also defeated Neshoba Central 3-0. Both now prepare for another Class II championship at Fannin Lanes in Brandon Friday, Feb. 28. The Lady Wave will try to make it four-straight MHSAA crowns, the boys have won five of the last six.

POWERLIFTING: Boys powerlifting won the Division 2-6A title Friday night. Eight lifters qualified for North Half at Charleston Saturday, March 8th. Girls will travel to Regionals at Oxford Friday at 1 p.m.

BASEBALL: Coach Gary Enis and his 2014 squad will participate in the Nettleton Jamboree Saturday at 1 and 5 p.m. They will face Baldwyn and Nettleton.

FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL: Coach Josh Hegwood and his 2014 girls will compete at the Mooreville Jamboree Saturday.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Seniors bowler Ashleigh Burns, Ellye Gafford, and Marcus Robinson lead their teams to Class II North Regional titles yesterday.
  • Junior Asia Partlow had 10 points, nine rebounds, and three charges in Thursday’s loss to Horn Lake. Senior Bre Jernigan totaled 25 points against Horn Lake and Corinth. Jernigan also had five assists and four steals against the Lady Warriors.
  • Junior Antonio Green notched 20 (points), five (rebounds), five (assists) and 21, seven, and six in wins over Horn Lake and Corinth. Junior Malik Douglas put up 16 points and seven rebounds in Friday’s regular season finale.
