Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (February 2)

BASKETBALL: Lady Wave basketball (21-1, 5-0), ranked No. 3 in last week’s Clarion-Ledger Super 10 and No. 1 in the Daily Journal, defeated South Panola and Memphis Central (TN) last week. The win over South Panola clinched the No. 1 seed in the Division 2-6A tournament February 18th. The Golden Wave (15-8, 5-0) defeated South Panola in their only contest last week. THS can win their division with a win over Grenada Tuesday or with a loss of three points or less. Both teams will also travel to in-county rival Shannon Friday.

SOCCER: Golden Wave soccer (12-3-2) finished their season last week with a win over Southaven and a loss at Flowood against Northeast Rankin. Lady Wave soccer (15-2) defeated Southaven and Clinton to advance to their 4th-straight 6A North Half championship. They’ll face Madison Central in Madison Tuesday. The winner will advance to the 6A final at Clinton High School Friday at 5 p.m. Brandon and Gulfport will battle for the South Half title Tuesday night.

BOWLING: Lady Wave bowling (9-0-1) defeated Starkville at Bulldog Lanes in Starkville Thursday 4-0. High games came from Taylor Russell (199), Ashleigh Burns (178), and Addison Gable (175). Russell finished with a high series of 514.  The boys (11-0-1) defeated Starkville, 4-0. High games included Clayton Horton (244), Cody Chambers (206), and Drew Turberville (193). Horton took the high series with a 656. Both teams return to the lanes Tuesday when they host East Webster at Rebelanes.

SPRING SPORTS: 2013-2014 spring sports (archery, golf, baseball, track, tennis, fast-pitch softball) will be allowed to practice after school tomorrow.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Junior forward Asia Partlow had 10+ rebounds in wins over South Panola and Memphis Central.
  • Sophomore defender Liza Wise scored the game-winning goal over Clinton and was the leader on the back line of defense. She also helped keep Southaven and Clinton scoreless in their two playoff wins last week.
  • Senior bowler Ellye Gafford and freshman Emily McCaleb both bowling over their average on difficult lane conditions helping the Lady Wave “roll” to a win over Starkville.
  • Junior bowler Clayton Horton, despite adverse lane conditions, was able to overcome the challenges bowling back-to-back 244 scores for G2 and G3 helping the team win over Starkville.
