Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (February 23)

BASKETBALL: Lady Wave basketball (26-2) defeated Hernando and South Panola to win the Div. 2-6A tournament title last week. They will host Div. 1-6A No. 2 Olive Branch tomorrow (24-5) at 6 p.m. The Lady Conquistadors and Lady Wave played November 21st at Oxford. THS won 57-53. Winner of Monday’s game will advance to North Half at THS (if THS wins) Thursday and Saturday nights. The Golden Wave (19-10) beat South Panola Tuesday but lost a close one to Grenada in Friday’s finals. They now travel to Horn Lake Tuesday to battle in a do-or-die at 7 p.m. Tupelo defeated Horn Lake at THS Feb. 13th. If THS beats Horn Lake and Greenville-Weston beats Starkville, THS boys will host North Half Friday and Saturday. If THS beats Horn Lake but Starkville wins Tuesday, the Yellow Jackets will host boys North Half.

BOWLING: Both teams prepare for another MHSAA Class II championship at Fannin Lanes in Brandon Friday. The Lady Wave (13-0-1) will try to make it four-straight crowns this weekend while the boys (14-0-1) have won five of the last six.

POWERLIFTING: Six girls qualified for North Half after placing 3rd at the Oxford Regional last Friday.

BASEBALL: THS opened jamboree-play at Nettleton with wins over Baldywn and Nettleton yesterday. Read David Wheeler’s recap. They’ll open the 2014 season at home this week as they host the Tupelo Classic. THS will face Saltillo Friday at 6 p.m. and Louisville Saturday at 5 p.m. Both games will stream LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL: Softball notched wins over IAHS and Mantachie at yesterday’s Mooreville Jamboree. Coach Josh Hegwood’s team opens the 2014 season with games against Tishomingo County and Kossuth at the Kossuth Classic Saturday.

SHOWCHOIR AND STRUCTURE: THS Showchoir and Structure received 1st Runner Up at the Music City Show Shoppe in Nashville yesterday. According to their tweet,  they changed their entire show less than 24 hours ago.

DECA: 24 members will compete at state Monday and Tuesday in Jackson. Those that place in the top three of their event will qualify for internationals in Atlanta in May.

ATHLETIC AND DEBATE TEAM: Tupelo competed at Regionals at Vanderbilt University in Nashville yesterday.

TENNIS: Tennis will play classic matches against Madison Central and Ocean Spring at Ridgeland Tennis Complex Friday. Coach Laurie Bishop’s team will open the 2014 season at Oxford next Tuesday.

GOLF: Boys and girls golf will host classic matches against New Albany, Itawamba (girls), and Baldwyn at Natchez Trace golf course tomorrow at 3.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Lady Wave basketball claimed their first division tournament titles since 2008-2009 last week.
  • Senior Isaiah Traylor had 29 points, five rebounds, and two steals in Tupelo’s loss to Grenada Friday.
  • Freshman Katie Rieves totaled four hits, three RBIs, two stolen bases, and scored two runs in jamboree wins over IAHS and Mantachie. Freshman Lauren Knight had the game-winning hit to beat IAHS.
