BASKETBALL: Lady Wave basketball (17-1, 3-0) moved up five spots to No. 4 in last week’s Clarion-Ledger Girls Super 10 rankings. Only Horn Lake, Clinton, and New Hope, which is actually their only loss this season, are ranked higher. They also debuted at No. 1 in the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal’s area girls rankings. Matt Justice’s team defeated South Panola in Batesville and Grenada at THS to bring keep Division 2-6A record perfect. They will travel to Hernando Tuesday before battling 5A Scott Central in the Mid-Mississippi Challenge at Ackerman Saturday at 5:45. Mississippi’s leading girls scorer senior forward Victoria Vivians (45.0 PPG) has Scott Central at 15-3. Golden Wave basketball (12-8, 3-0) is currently riding a four-game winning streak entering this week. Jeff Norwood’s squad pulled a comeback win away from South Panola Tuesday and dominated Grenada Friday. They will also travel to Hernando Tuesday but will face North Pontotoc in the 23rd Annual Hotbed Classic at New Albany Middle School Saturday at 3:30. FYI: New Clarion-Ledger and Daily Journal rankings will be released Monday.
SOCCER: Golden Wave soccer (9-2-2) suffered their first two losses of the season last week. Hernando and No. 1 Madison Central gave No. 3 THS a minor setback in a matter of four days. N0. 2 Lady Wave soccer (12-2) demolished Hernando Tuesday before losing 2-0 at No. 3 Madison Central Friday. The girls are currently without six starters due to various injuries. Both teams will host three games this week at 5 and 7 p.m.: Pontotoc Tuesday, Grenada Thursday, and South Panola Friday. First Round playoffs begin Tuesday, January 28th. Sites and seeding should be determined this week. FYI: New Clarion-Ledger rankings will be released Tuesday.
BOWLING: Lady Wave bowling (6-1) defeated rival West Union at Action Lanes in New Albany Monday 8-0. High games came from Addison Gable (195), Ellye Gafford (183), and Ashleigh Burns (179). Addison Gable finished with a high series of 496. The boys (6-0-1) defeated WU 7-1. High games included Drew Turberville (216), Marcus Robinson (209), Cody Chambers (199), and Eli McCaleb (198). Drew Turberville took the high series with a 563. Both teams return to the lanes Thursday when they battle Olive Branch and Lewisburg at Strikezone in Southaven.
BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:
- Junior guard Jaleigha Polk outscored Grenada 19-17 in the first half Friday. She finished with a game-high 22 points.
- Freshman midfielder Reid Chapman stepped up and played back line for the Lady Wave despite not playing or starting there all season.
- Senior forward KJ Armstrong scored Tupelo’s lone goal at Madison Central Friday.
- Senior bowler Ellye Gafford stepped up to bowl a 490 series, her highest of the season, against West Union.
- Junior bowler Eli McCaleb came off the bench to spark his team to win pivotal games over West Union.
