Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (March 9)

BASEBALL: Baseball (4-1) played three tough games in a matter of 24 hours Friday and Saturday. The squad defeated North Pontotoc in Ecru Friday, and Alcorn Central and Pontotoc at Pontotoc Saturday. Hudson Roy, Jason Garrett, and Carter Clayton picked up the wins for the Golden Wave.  They’ll play three games over Spring Break: Tuesday vs. Southaven at Oxford at 3:45 p.m., Wednesday vs. Lake Cormorant at Oxford at 6 p.m., and host Oxford Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games this week will stream LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com.

FAST-PITCH SOFTBALL: Softball (3-1) lost to IAHS Tuesday but defeated Valley View (AR) and Lake Cormorant at South Panola yesterday. Thursday’s game versus Smithville was postponed due to weather. It will be made-up Monday, April 7th. THS will participate in the South Pontotoc tournament Thursday in Springville. They’ll face the Lady Cougars at 11:15 a.m. and Water Valley at 1:15 p.m.

TENNIS: Tennis (1-1) lost at Oxford Tuesday but defeated New Albany Friday. They’ll open division-play by hosting Grenada at Rob Leake Park Tuesday, March 18th.

GOLF: Boys golf defeated Baldwyn at TCC Tuesday and Amory/Saltillo at Riverbirch Wednesday. Austin Rose medaled against Baldwyn and co-medaled, with Daniel Purnell, against Amory/Saltillo. The girls defeated Amory Wednesday. Michaela Bryan medaled in the win. THS will battle Lewisburg and Starkville at TCC Monday, March 17th.

ARCHERY: Archery defeated Starkville 2960-2319. Top male shooter was Trevor Bates Webb and female was Jessie McGee (259). Tupelo will travel to Saltillo Monday, March 17th.

TRACK: Track and field boys placed 1st while the girls came in 2nd at Friday’s USM Invitational. They’ll compete in the Ole Miss Invitational in Oxford Friday, March 21st.

POWERLIFTING: Boys placed 2nd in Saturday’s North Half in Charleston. Two lifters won their individual weight class. State finals are Saturday, April 19th.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Hudson Roy got the win at North Pontotoc, and has pitched 13 scoreless innings and allowed only one hit in 2014. Carter Clayton pitched 10, yes 10, solid innings against Pontotoc in the 12-inning win. William Ikerd provided the game-winning three-run home run against Pontotoc Saturday.
  • Ivy Watts pitched softball to their second win of the season. Paige Cox went 3 for 6 in Batesville yesterday.
  • After dropping a tight 3-setter against Oxford, Sarah Lambert Hollingsworth captured her first, well-deserved win of the season on the mixed court at New Albany with fellow Blanket, Hogan Harrington. Hogan won his second and third matches of the season this week. The first at Oxford, winning the second boys doubles court, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0, with partner, Eric Huey. The second came at New Albany on the mixed court with Sarah Lambert Hollingsworth, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0.
  • Austin Rose and Daniel Purnell were co-medalists at Amory. Rose was also the individual medalist against Baldwyn Tuesday. THS girls golf had a strong showing against Amory Thursday.
