Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (September 1)

Another great week at THS.

VOLLEYBALL: Coach Bishop’s Lady Wave squad (5-3) defeated Belmont Tuesday (25-15, 25-22, 25-18) and Corinth Thursday (25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-21). They open division play Thursday at Horn Lake at 6 p.m., and hosts their 14th Annual Tupelo Volleyfest Saturday. Here’s the schedule:

S-P SOFTBALL: Coach Hegwood’s team (5-2-1, 1-0) defeated division rival Oxford Tuesday (7-0) but was lost to Kossuth Thursday (7-4). Lady Wave softball will travel to Baldwyn Tuesday and host the Lady Cougars of South Pontotoc this week. JV at 5, varsity following. JV defeated both Oxford and Kossuth.

FOOTBALL: No. 24-ranked Golden Wave football improved to 2-0 this season by defeating a hard-nosed Center Hill group, 27-3, Friday night. Coach Hammond’s team continues their four-game road test this week at in-county rival Shannon. The game will be broadcasted live on www.goldenwaveathletics.com at 6:50 p.m.

XC: THS opened the 2013 season at the Memphis Twilight last Saturday. Boys placed 7th behind two teams from Missouri and Tennessee, and one team from Alabama and Arkansas. They were paced by Darnell Collier who finished 12th out of 601 high school boys with a time of 16:50. The girls placed 5th behind two team from Missouri, and one team from Arkansas and Tennessee. Junior Christina Daniels led THS to a 4th place finish overall, out of 439, with a time of 19:04. XC travels to Moulton, AL to participate in the Chickasaw Trails race this Saturday.

SWIMMING: Coach Lucas Smith and his teams will open the 2013 season at Rob Leake Park Tuesday afternoon. Both squads won state in 2012.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Senior OH Morgan Hereford finished the week with a total of eight aces and 15 kills versus Belmont and Corinth.
  • Senior DL Alyjiawon Johnson. Johnson had several effective tackles on defense against Center Hill. He notched one sack, two pressures, four assists, and three tackles. According to Coach Andrew Jones, he graded at 80%. Also, he came up with big plays on special teams.
  • 8th grader Koji Dijkwel led THS middle school XC boys to team victories at the Memphis Twilight two-straight years. He was 16th last year and 3rd last Saturday.
  • Junior Christina Daniels led THS to a 4th place finish overall, out of 439, with a time of 19:04.
