Review, Preview, and Blankets of the Week (September 8)

VOLLEYBALL: THS opened division play at Horn Lake Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over the Lady Eagles. Gene Phelps had the recap. They hosted their annual Volleyfest Saturday and went 4-1 on the day. Here’s that recap. Coach Bishop’s team will travel to Ripley Tuesday and host Southaven Thursday.

S-P SOFTBALL: THS lost a tough battle to Baldwyn Tuesday, 11-0, but won a huge contest against South Pontotoc in eight innings Thursday, 5-4. The Lady Wave will hosts division foe South Panola Tuesday and hosts Mooreville Thursday and Saturday. Tuesday’s division game will be broadcasted LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com by WTHS at 6 p.m.

FOOTBALL: Trent Hammond’s team improved to 3-0 on the season with a blowout win at Shannon Friday night. Here’s a look back at David Wheeler’s summary. Tupelo now prepares for another in-county but an undefeated rival off HWY 45 North… the Saltillo Tigers. This will be the first time they’ve ever met in high school football history. WTHS will broadcast the game LIVE at www.goldenwaveathletics.com Friday at 6:55 p.m.

XC: Both teams competed in Moulton, AL Saturday. Boys and girls teams will compete at Pontotoc High School this Saturday.

SWIMMING: Both teams opened the 2013 season with wins at Rob Leake City Park last Tuesday. Read Gene’s summary. Boys and girls teams will travel to Oxford Saturday.

 

BLANKETS OF THE WEEK:

  • Softballer Katie Rieves had the game-winning hit, Abby Stafford racked up three hits, Ally Watt had three RBIs, and Avery Goggans finished a key outfield assist against South Pontotoc.
  • Senior running back Quinn Tiggs had seven rushes for 141 yards with one touchdown along with two receptions for seven yards against Shannon. For the year, Tiggs has rushed 34 times for 315 yards (9.27) with three touchdowns.
  • Junior setter Alexis Zosel guided her team with a total of 11 kills and 12 aces in last week’s six matches. She also averaged 20 assists a match.
